An automatic backwashing process (involving the addition of sodium or potassium chloride) is able to clean the softening media allowing it to be useful for many years. However, over a period of time (3-5 years depending on the size of the filtration system and quality of water), the adsorption capacity of the carbon media will be reached, and then the bed should be replaced with a fresh supply of activated carbon.
