Fluorides can be found in nature as a result of the geological composition of soils and bedrock. Most water supplies contain some naturally occurring fluoride. Fluoride also enters drinking water in discharge from fertilizer or aluminum factories. In Canada, the optimal range for fluoride in drinking water suggested by Health Canada is 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L). Today, exposure to fluoride comes from fluoridated dental products that help prevent tooth decay, as well as the voluntary addition of fluoride to drinking water.
